Jaishankar: Journey from JNU to Ministry of External Affairs, not only Modi but also Manmohan's choice
Journey from JNU to Ministry of External Affairs
Jaishankar did his PhD from JNU after completing his MPhil in Political Science from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Jaishankar, a 1977 batch officer of the Foreign Service, had his first posting in the Indian Embassy in Russia. He was also the Press Secretary to the then President Shankar Dayal Sharma.
Jaishankar has been the Under-Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, India's First Secretary in the US, Political Advisor to the Indian Army in Sri Lanka, India's Ambassador to Tokyo and the Czech Republic and India's Ambassador to China. Jaishankar is considered to have played a major role in resolving the Doklam standoff through talks with China.
Jaishankar played an important role in the negotiations on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal. The agreement was initiated in 2005 and was signed by the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government in 2007. Jaishankar was also honored with the Padma Shri award in the same year. Considered close to PM Modi
People may be seeing Jaishankar as a surprise entry, but he is considered to be an administrative officer close to PM Modi. In 2012, when Narendra Modi was on a visit to China as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Jaishankar met him. After that meeting between the two, Jaishankar became Modi's credible.
The fact that Jaishankar's tenure as Foreign Secretary was about to end in 2017 itself was estimated to be close to PM Modi, but his tenure was extended. He was Foreign Secretary from 2015 to 2018.
Jaishankar accompanied PM Modi during almost every foreign visit till 2018. Jaishankar played a key role in planning and making it a success for PM Modi's first US visit as Prime Minister in September 2014.
